The virus that causes African swine fever (ASF) has been detected (31.7.2026) in wild boars found dead in Virolahti. Measures to prevent the spread of the disease were initiated immediately.
The Finnish Food Authority has established an infection zone around the discovery site and a smaller core area where the strictest restrictions are in effect. A wild boar-proof fence is:
- A wire mesh fence
- Fence height of at least 1.7 m
- Mesh size of 50×50 mm
- The bottom edge must be anchored to the ground at one-meter intervals or buried at least 0.20 m deep
- A gate, which must be kept closed when not in use
- The doorless end wall or rear wall of a pig barn, feed storage, or bedding storage area may form part of the fence.
